I am honored to be selected as the 2023 Grand Marshal for Twin Cities Pride, which should serve as a visible reminder to the young people of this community that they belong, and they deserve access to the health care they need to thrive.

The award is designed to recognize LGBTQ+ individuals who have shown a deep commitment in their personal and professional lives to create space for LGBTQ+ youth to feel safe and empowered to be their true selves.

March 31 marks International Transgender Day of Visibility, a day started in 2009 to celebrate the transgender community. In particular, the transgender and gender diverse people who have the courage, safety and agency to express their identities openly and visibly in their public and private lives.

Every day that I'm in the Children’s Minnesota Gender Health clinic, I hear from patients and families who wonder if they will have to flee our state in order to continue to love and support their transgender child. That’s why I have been to the Minnesota State Capitol several times the past two months fighting to protect and support transgender and gender diverse youth.

As you take a moment to remember the Holocaust, I also encourage you to take a moment to reflect on your role in speaking out against attempts to dehumanize others.

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation has released a new report about the threats and harassment targeting health care providers and systems for offering gender-affirming care. On Friday, Dec. 2, the City of Minneapolis took action to ensure transgender and gender-diverse youth will continue to have access to life-saving health care. Dr. Angela Kade Goepferd, chief education officer and medical director of the Gender Health program at Children’s Minnesota, was among those invited to the signing.
